California Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris blasted the White House after President Trump, under pressure from conservative activists, re-nominated two conservative California judges to the 9th Circuit federal appeals court over their opposition.
” We are deeply dissatisfied that the White Home has actually chosen to re-nominate Daniel Collins and Kenneth Lee to the 9th Circuit,” Feinstein and Harris said in a joint declaration late Wednesday. “We explained our opposition to these individuals and informed the White House we wished to collaborate to come to agreement on a new package of nominees.”
WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCES 51 JUDICIAL CHOICES
The White House announced the nomination of Collins and Lee, among other judicial nominations. Daniel A. Bress was also chosen to the 9th Circuit.
The election of Collins and Lee bypasses the standard “blue-slip” procedure in which the senators of the home state of the candidate offer their permission to the choice. Feinstein and Harris said they had actually intended to “collaborate to come to consensus on a new package of candidates” instead of President Trump nominating Collins and Lee.
Last week, the White House had actually revealed the re-nomination of 51 federal judicial candidates left over from the previous Congress, starting the administration’s effort to install more conservative judges after GOP activists worried that such consultations had actually stalled.
Collins and Lee, however, were not at first nominated again, since of settlements between the White House and Harris and Feinstein. They were first nominated in October.
Conservative activists opposed those negotiations, however, as the Wall Street Journal editorial board drew attention to the scenario and argued that both Feinstein and Harris “were 2 of the worst mudslingers on the Judiciary Committee that smeared Brett Kavanaugh.”
” Why on earth would the WH consent to stain its sterling legacy of circuit court judges & desert the opportunity to improve the infamous 9th Cir to assist Sens (and a prospective POTUS challenger) who are shafting him every chance they get?” tweeted Carrie Severino, the primary counsel and policy director of the Judicial Crisis Network.
Ken Blackwell, the previous Ohio secretary of state, had said the White Home’s failure to re-nominate the judges was “extremely demoralizing.”
” No handle Senate liberals,” Blackwell composed on Facebook.
The liberal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, with a vast province representing nine Western states, has actually long been a thorn in the side of the Trump White House, with judgments versus the travel ban and limitations on funding to “sanctuary cities.”
On Thursday, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, praised Trump’s nomination of Collins, Lee and Bress.
” I’m really helpful of the nominees sent by President Trump to serve on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. These are highly certified nominees and I am confident they will receive wide bipartisan support,” Graham said. “These nominations continue a trend by the Trump Administration of selecting highly certified males and females to serve on the federal bench.”
