Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” Sen. Penis Durbin (D-IL) stated the government shutdown would end when President Donald Trump “understands he’s lost the Senate Republicans.”

On the president declaring a nationwide emergency, Durbin said, “Presidents have actually been very careful in using that. When George W. Bush dealt with 9/11 he asked us for national emergency powers, we provided it to him on a bipartisan basis, united as a nation to combat off terrorism. However if this president is going to turn to nationwide emergency situations each time he disagrees with Congress, I’m versus it. Let’s make certain the branches of government are bound by the very same Constitution.”

Host George Stephanopoulos asked, “How does this end?”

Durbin stated, “I believe it ends when the Senate Republicans say ‘We’ve had enough. We’re not going to stand here and be blamed for this. Our company believe the federal government needs to be opened. There need to be prompt negotiations on border security after the federal government is open.’ Once the president recognizes he’s lost the Senate Republicans, we can roll up our sleeves, open the federal government and get down to company.”
