MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP)– Miami Dolphins receiver Kenny Stills says he has no difficult feelings toward Stephen Ross concerning the group owner’s support of Donald Trump, and says his objections to a fundraising event for the president aren’t political.
But Stills says there’s a contradiction in Ross supporting both racial equality and Trump.
” It’s not right,” Stills stated following the Dolphins’ preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night. “Our nation remains in a rough place today. I think there are other candidates he could support, but it’s not about Democrat or Republican politician. It’s about why are you trying to help this guy raise cash to continue to do the important things he has been doing.”
In the wake of his current criticism, Stills stated, he has received death threats– “5 to 10 in a night”– on social networks but didn’t report them.
” It is what it is,” he said with a small smile. “I’ll be OK.”
Stills earlier slammed Ross on Twitter for preparing to host a charity event Friday at his Long Island house for Trump. Stills noted that Ross is the founder of RISE, a not-for-profit that aims to remove racial discrimination, champ social justice and enhance race relations.
” It doesn’t line up,” Stills said in the postgame locker space. “Somebody needs to have enough courage to let him understand you can’t play both sides of this. Possibly I should not have done it on social media, however I did. If you’re going to associate yourself with bad individuals, then people are going to understand about it.”
In a statement Wednesday, Ross said he’s a champion of racial equality however likewise a longtime friend of Trump’s and “an active participant in the democratic process.”
Coach Brian Flores stated he talked with Stills about the tweet slamming Ross.
” I understand him wishing to be a voice for individuals who do not have a voice,” Flores stated. “I asked him why he didn’t speak to Steve first prior to putting something out.
