Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) detention of migrants resembles “the auction block during slavery,” said Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), in an interview last Thursday onPod Save Americawith Jon Lovett, a former speechwriter for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
Pressley described border security measures as encouraged by “ruthlessness,” echoing characterizations used by Democrat presidential candidates Joe Biden, Sen. Cory Booker (NJ), Sen. Kamala Harris ( CA), and various Senate Democrats:
I didn’t purchase for a second that the humanitarian crisis at the border had anything to do with a deficit of funding. When I went to the border to attest to this humanitarian crisis, we saw plenty of tooth brushes and toothpaste and the like, so again, the ruthlessness is the point. It’s just about how you select to devote and allocate those funds, and within days of that costs passing, that plan death, this so-called humanitarian aid costs I think something like three brand-new ICE centers were opened, and after that they were putting into play ICE raids throughout the country, and that is why throughout my project I required the defunding and abolishing of ICE.
… I am not cavalier about the abolishing of any agency. There are a lot of agencies that I believe are in alarming requirement of reform, and I do that deal with my team every day to hold them responsible, however an agency that is utilizing what throughout history has actually been proven as one of the most efficient tools of injustice, which is to different households. We’re all stunned by what we see, but we’ve been here before on bookings with indigenous and native individuals, at the auction block during slavery.
” Now we are deporting children with terminal health problems,” Pressley alleged, a false claim pressed by Biden and associated news media outlets, including,” We will lift up these stories in the hopes that individuals will have an epiphany and some level of knowledge and humanity, and if they do not, we will bring the fire. That’s it.”
Democrats should take advantage of “ethnic and specialized media” in their 2020 governmental election campaign, recommended Pressley, showing on her own 2016 campaign in which she ousted previous Rep. Michael Capuano (D-MA), who had actually not faced a main challenger in 20 years:
We chose to buy ethnic and specialty media, and the Latino neighborhood in [Massachusetts’s 7th District] has to do with 7 percent, so you understand, I had experts at the table that said, ‘Hey, we’ll leave. This is going to be the death knell of your campaign. You’re going to go on Telemundo and Univision in a primary?’, which’s what we did and we grew the Latino vote by 71 percent. We grew the trainee vote by 400 percent. 2 hundred and fifty put behind bars guys behind the wall of MCI-Norfolk– who I’ll be returning to go to in a couple of days– held a debate-watching celebration, endorsed our project, and organized a minimum of three member of the family on the outside to go to the surveys. …We’ve got to take part in the politics of change and not transaction.
” Activists and agitators” are required, Pressley declared, to fix our democracy. “I wish to remain in coalition pounding this administration and ultimately forcing out the resident of this White House,” she stated.
“[It] is all about movement structure, arranging, and setting in motion,” she said. “I think these times also require unprecedented activism. …When our democracy is working once again on behalf of the American people, and that occurs from the pressure on the outside that activists and agitators continue to exert, we will have established a new floor on these issues.”
” I have actually always maintained that individuals closest to the pain need to be closest to the power, driving and notifying the policymaking,” included Pressley, including herself among those she framed as “closest to discomfort.”
Pressley described “the Team”– composed of herself and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI)– as “threatening” to President Donald Trump, who she solely described as “the occupant of this White House.”
